Could i do a tiny mini mash?

Post by Martin the fish » Tue Feb 05, 2008 1:51 pm

I have a day off tomorrow with the rest of NZ as it's Waitangi day. Our National holiday. Unfortunately i only have 750g of pale malt. Loads of crystal and some choc. Could i brew a small batch of something with this small amount? And would my 33ltr coolbox mash tun be suitable? a session beer comes to mind due to the small amount of grain. One of you must be able to throw something recipe wise at me eh?
I've got EKG, Fug, Nel Sauv, Challenger, Green Bullet and sticklebract hops so no shortage there. My 25kg sack of MO won't arraive till thursday and then i won't get to brew for 10 days or so. Keen to keep the production line going, even if it is only a tiny brew.

Off to bed now as it's 2.05am. Hoping to wake up with some ideas given to my tiny brew.
Ta in advance :D

Probably not going to be able to do much of a mash with that amount. You can't really make beer substituting pale malt with crystal (or even choc) as the flavours would be too strong.

Doing a mash with 750g pale and the usual amount of crystal and then just adding sugar at the end to beef up the alcohol content would leave you with a very thin and watery beer. You also need the alpha and beta amylase from the pale malt to convert the starch in the crystal and chocolate malts. Unless you want to do a tiny brew, I'd just wait until you have more supplies.

I guess you could do a gallon of beer but that's about it.

You can easily fill a demijohn with that amount. Never pass up the chance for a brew! Use the opportunity to try something new. Have you thought of using stuff from around the house like rice, breakfast cereals, brown sugar...? It might turn out undrinkable or it might turn out great. I've used Weetabix before to beef up a stout turned out one of the best stouts I've ever made.

Or how about a braggot? I've been meaning to try this recipe for ages but haven't got round to it yet. Fits you ingredients to a tee (assuming you can get the honey). There must be others on the forum that have tried it. Any good?

I got on to other things, unfortunately. Some did include eating and drinking beer, which was good.
I'd like to have a go at a 'mini mash' now i have a bit more experience and proper milled grain. I think it would be a good way to try out some recipes cheaply.

The only downside to mini mash I did was that the quantities of hops are that small that unless you have scales that can measure in 1g increments then you can be a little hit and miss with the desired bitterness.

That could be my fault for getting cascade hops so the highish AA means even less hops are needed

I have letter scales for posting documents and they measure in 0.1g increments. More worried about the thermal qualities of my coolbox with only 2.5ltr water and a kg of grain in.

Wouldn't mind watching a beer ferment in my demi though. 8)

As per DaaB's write up mash in a stock pot and use the oven to hold temp.
