Indeedy, I think you need a licence to still give beer away, I would imagine it's very difficult to cirumvent most restrictions when alcohol and tax are put together!Andy wrote:I'd imagine HMRC would see things differentlyagentgonzo wrote:One thing my friend did was to set up one of his barrels on the end of the bar and give it away free. There was a collection bowl in front of the barrel with labelled "suggested donation" or something like that. As he's not selling it and was just giving it away, I think it circumvented most of the restrictions.

Back in the mists of time it was illegal to brew your own beer, even if it was only for your own consumption, without gettin a licence from HM Customs and Excise. Then in the late 60s the Chancellor, Reginald Maudling, (may his name be praised) scrapped these regulations and made it possible for home brewers to make beer without a licence, provided that it was for domestic consumption only. HM C and E or whatever they are called nowadays would presumably argue that giving beer away in a pub is not exactly domestic consumption.

Er....no. No money must change hands, wether called a donation or whatever. You can't even offer homebrew as a prize in a raffle, if the tickets have been purchased.agentgonzo wrote:One thing my friend did was to set up one of his barrels on the end of the bar and give it away free.
