i have a book that my wife bought me ages ago and found this recipe, tell me if this sounds right, the book in question is home wine and beer, by judith grosvenor, from 1983

stout
900g malt syrup
42g fuggles
500g brown sugar
100g flaked wheat
200g crystal malt
100g black malt
pinch of salt
8ltrs water
yeast

pour 2ltrs of hot water into a very large pan and stir in the malt syrup, wash out the container with a little hot water and add to the pan,

add the sugar, flaked wheat, crushed crystal malt, black malt salt and two-thirds of the hops, bring to the boil and maintain a gently rolling boil under a cover for half hour,

add the rest of the hops wetting them thoroughly and continue to boil for a further fifteen mins.
when boiling is finished remove the pan from the heat and leave it for half hour for the solids to settle,

pour off the wort and strain of the hops through a fine straining bag, stir in the sugar and dissolve, add the rest of the water to make up 9ltrs,

when the wort has cooled to 20deg c add the yeast,

cover the fv leave it in a cool rather than warm place, next day skim off the dirty froth and give the beer a thorough stiring, replace the lid, next day repeat the process,

after the second stirring add the rest of the hops and leave the beer to ferment out,

when fermentation has finished and the surface of the beer is clear, move the bin to the coldest place you can find to settle out, leave for 24hrs,

siphon the beer into bottles, with hlf tsp sugar per pint, shake the bottles to dissolve the sugar, leave in a warm place for a few days then into the cool for a few weeks.

Umm! No!

If you want alcohol, it'll be fine. If you want quality, you are unlikely to achieve it.
