Removing the wort from the FV

Post by stevezx7r » Fri Apr 11, 2008 10:46 am

Just wondering if it's acceptable to remove the semi fermented beer/wort from the FV.

I've just got a new FV and need to move the beer I made the other day into that so I can use the element in the FV the beer is in at the moment. Does that make sense?

I can see their being a risk of contaminating the beer or halting the fermentation process but I need to get another on the way today, so, would it be ok to do this?

All you need to do is "drop" your semi-fermented wort from one FV to another via siphon tubing in the same manner as brewers who drop into a closed fermenter with an airlock after the yeast head starts to subside (2-3 days in to fementation).
If you ensure no air gets in on transfer the yeast will be thoroughly roused and should encourage yeast activity rather than halting fermentation

Cheers Scroogemonster, but i've just remembered I have a baby burco sitting here doing nothing (currently on ebay  ) so I will just use that to boil the sparge water.
