Taking two barrels on holiday.

Post by stevezx7r » Mon Apr 21, 2008 1:41 pm

I've got a bike show to go to this May (BMF, East of England Showground, Peterborough). I've got two FV's, one with my Golden Pale ale the other with my Brake Fluid. They are going to be taken to the bike show (in the back of a car  ) but due to the bumps etc in driving I have a couple of questions.
1 - I need them to be drinkable on the day so I was thinking of putting the beer into a barrel today (they've been in the FV for 11 - 12 days now) let them mature then transfer them to another barrel the day before we go so I can remove as much of the yeast as possible.
2 - I run a good risk of oxidation - Would over carbonating them before the second transfer lower this risk?

So, basically, any ideas on how to shift two five gallon containers for 3 hours in the car without ruining my beer? Temperature control springs to mind now too...

I have moved a fully conditioned Cornie full of beer in the car, strapped in the passenger seat with a seatbelt. I kept it under a few pounds of pressure (there had never been oxygen or yeast to speak of in there in the first place) and just set it up as normal at the other end. Didn't drink until the next day but it was perfect.

Your other option might be to get some of those special pressure caps (others will know more) and take your beer in PETs?

I have thought about the PET bottle approach but I only have three tops and beer doesn't taste as good compared to a barrel. Saying that, once we're at the fest I will be decanting into two litre PET's and carbonating to walk around with.

I think I'll go with trying to remove as much yeast as possible via 2ndary then transfer to a fresh barrel, carb and drive to the fest.

Why not transfer without priming, that would hopefully keep the yeast very low anyway. You could always filter it when you transfer but you risk losing flavour.

I don't prime these days anyway which is why I think I'll do it in two stages - Some yeast always gets carried over and I seem to be in the minority who hate it in beer.

It's almost done now, the Golden Pale Ale is transferred into keg 1 and the Brake Fluid is on it's way as I type. Then, after around 4 weeks i'll transfer again to another pair of barrels so I hopefully won't have a cloudy pint once at the doo.

Sounds like it will work fine.

Don't get them mixed up - you'll feel dreadful, until you die

OK, just realised, nobody needs that much brake fluid. It's not really brake fluid, is it :bonk

As long as you don't try bleeding your brakes with IPA...
