Cocktail Pale Malt-anybody tried this?

Post by Bryggmester » Sun Apr 27, 2008 2:36 pm

I heard that the local micro brewery has been trying Cocktail Pale Malt from Muntons, apparently it is a spring malt. I had never heard of this, has anyone out there had experience of this malt, and, if so, how did you rate it?

I picked up a sack of this malt from my local micro in Brentwood a few months ago and the beer made from it was superb. In fact exactly the same as beer made from maris otter.
When I went back to the brewery recently I asked why they used it instead of maris otter and the reply was that it was just for sugar extraction and shouldn't influence the flavour of the beer.
They apparently use whatever pale malt is best at that time of year.
Cheers, Pete.

I've heard professional brewers who seem to view all pale malt purely in terms of the extract they'll get from it and all bittering hops solely as IBUs they'll get out.
