To Prime or not to prime

Post by purple8 » Wed May 21, 2008 8:36 am

My first mini ag has been in the demijohn for 3 days and ferminattion has slowed , iam yet to check the FG. having trawled the forum, iam not sure weather to prime or not. this first batch i will be bottling subsequant larger brews i wont(cant be assed). The current batch is an american wheat recipe.
Just want to gauge what the advantages/disadvantages are regading priming and general opinion.

Well i want it to be an ale type brew. Dont like stuff to fizzy these days. so i will bottle as is. Its been going 4 days and has reached the gravity where i want it.
So do i leave it until the weekend or bottle now. Also i forgot the irish moss so could i add a small amount of finings before bottling or will it not make much differance. Its taste rather than anything else i was concerned about on this small trail batch.

I have bottled/kegged too early before (after 4 days or so) and found you really need to leave it 7-10 days in the FV to ensure the yeast clears up any fermentation by-products (in my case diacetyl).

Even if it finishes fermenting in a few days, it's worth leaving it a few days longer.
