Probably Target is nearest of the ones you have. You're using it as a bittering hop? To know how much we need to know the alphas of the Northern Brewer in the recipe and the alpha of the Target you have.

What's the AA% of the target? You'll probably want to aim for 35-40 IBUs.

When I did a Guinness clone I used 60g Fuggles for (23l) and it turned out beautiful.

I've always used either Nugget or Chinook as their pretty similar to NB if you can get them in time

I read about chinook being a sub and I thought 'really?'. It doesn't strike me as that similar.

I've been told by my LHB that sticklebract are a good sub for Northern brewer. Personally i have no idea. :)

Northern Brewer doesn't really have a strong flavour of its own IMO, i've heard of it being 'woody' and even 'minty', but i've never picked that up from the NB beers i've made.

Must be the NB or Chinook I've got then :D

It's just that I've found Northern Brewer to have little flavour of it's own when used as a bittering hop. Chinook on the other hand is pretty obvious - grapefruit and pine - which comes through even when it's used as a bittering addition.

I read recently of Northdown being a substitute for Northern Brewer.

northern brewer replacement

Is it the old English NB you`re looking at replacing or
the German variety?

If it`s the English, Scarer is quite right that Northdown
is the modern replacement. Perfect blended in mild, stout
and Newcastle type brown ales. Fuggles is a good partner.

I have not used the German one yet so can`t comment.

For hops try Hop and Grape .co.uk
They have a good web site and mail order.
