I brewed a Mild today - and mighty fine it appears to be......but now I've suddenly thought that I forgot to put the Protofloc in
What effect will it have?
Nothing too disastrous I hope

Normally, your beer may not beer as clear as it could be if you used the protofloc. But, British malts tend to clear pretty well without it anyway. Plus, you're brewing a mild which doesnt have much malt and hops (i.e. less potential haze forming compounds), so I would expect it to be crystal clear anyway, without the protofloc.

I will assume protofloc is another form of whirlfloc/Irish moss.
Actually you might find an advantage, in that here, you have a batch without it, with which to compare your next batch, which will have it. May sound stupid but there has been some discussion as to just what the difference is between using and not using protofloc/Irish moss/whirlfloc tablets etc.
Now you will have the unique advantage of being able to tell from experience.

Of course, you would have to brew the same beer again to be able to do a proper comparison

Not really, clarity does'nt have a lot to do with flavour, gravity ( within reason) mouthfeel bitterness etc. He could get a good idea by brewing another similar beer but IMO he would not have to brew the same one.

I've had really bright beers without using it, but I guess that was more luck than anything else. I wouldn't leave home without it
