Gravity and Temperature

Post by Bongo » Fri Sep 12, 2008 10:44 am

Hi everyone
What adjustment do you need to use to check the gravity of the wort when you are sparging as it will be above 20c
I don't know if this has been answered elsewhere but i can't find it.

thanks

Thanks for that,i was thinking maybe i was getting too technical about such things, does everyone here bother adjusting is there that much of a difference anyway,i suppose i shall find out at the point of sparging,my first full mash seems not too far off at the moment just a few small bits of kit to sort and i shall cross over :)

As it can be a bit of a bugger to stop your sparge to fill a trial jar, measure the temp and adjust the reading I simply stop when i've either filled my boiler or the wort starts to look "thin". It's one of those things that will come to you with time/few brews. Unless you end up with a v. poor extraction from your grains it's unlikely your going to extract tannins (noticable anyway).

A refractometer is the way to go for this job as it's a simple case of let some wort splash onto the screen and read the results.

I use the finger trick - stick it under and, if it still tastes sweet, go with it.

thanks for that steve,i don't want to muck about too much on my first go at it,i'd rather go on my senses anyway.

finger trick i have not heard of that one Buzz, sounds simple and easy to me.
