Syphoning from Primary to secondary - problem question.

Post by sternsheet » Mon Sep 15, 2008 4:28 pm

My first effort at using Safale 04 has resulted in lots of yeast floating on the top of the primary fermenter, and lots of yeast/trub on the bottom. When I tried to syphon to the secondary fermenter, I found it very difficult not to get yeast / trub through the tube. Placing the end of the tube on the bottom caused the grot to be sucked up. Holding it near the top risked air being sucked through.

What do people do to make this easier?

When you say there's lots of yeast floating at the top.. do you mean a big thick head?

You should be using a siphon just above the trub layer on the bottom of the fermenter. Preferably with a siphon cup on the end so it doesn't suck from directly below the aperture.

You can get a proper syphon straw for about £2 which is a stiff plastic tube with a sort of cup on the end about 3/4" high. This sits on the bottom of the FV so it sucks up beer from above the yeast deposit.

You can see one in action here:

It was already on JBK, and therefore on Photobucket...
