Did you measure the gravity of the last few litres of wort ?

22 litres is a lot for a 12 litre recipe! :) Best get boiling to reduce it then 8)

Ideally you should stop sparging when the gravity of the wort reaches 1006-1010, if you keep going then undesirable flavours can be extracted.

Anyway, you've gone past that point now so no need worrying about it.
To calculate efficiency you work out what the potential extract per litre of your grains would give you and compare this with the actual extract per litre you obtain. So you need to measure the wort gravity when in the fermenter *before* you pitch the yeast. You can then work out your brewhouse efficiency.

Why not! Throwing away good beer is wrong 8)

If space is an issue in the boiler then you could keep some wort back and use it to top up the boil as wort evaporates.

And I thought I was goooooing so well,is there there a way of working out how much sparge liqour you need, instead of having to take reading all the time,as by the time i've cooled the sample to take the reading,I think I need to take another one.

Hello all i bought a refractometer from ebay a few years ago it posted from the states. And was still only around £40 with postage. So much easier than using hydrometers to check final runnings. And has automatic temperature correction also has a shinny bit at the top. Cheers
