Hops in Keg

Post by Chris123 » Tue Sep 30, 2008 7:34 pm

Hello.

Is it OK to add Hops into the kegs before securing ? My recipe suggests some, I just wanted to check - will they be sterile ?

Chris.

Yes, hops have their own built-in antibacterial agents. It's fine to add them to the keg (and common practice).

I use a muslin bag and a few marbles boiled up for 5-10mins. Seems to work better than putting them straight in.

I use those little white nylon bags with a drawstring at one end. I think they were given out by one of the detergent companies to put the solid tablets of detergent in when they first came out.
Boil the bag up for 5 minutes, but don't bother with any marbles.
Works a treat, lots of hop flavour, but no hop leaves in the glass :D

Thanks, but too late now as I have done it.

Great idea for next time.

Chris.

I must confess, I just chuck 'em in. There's a school of thought that this can cause clogging of your keg tap, though.

I've done this several ways:
On one of my corny kegs I have secured a bit of stainless hose to the end of the dip tube. In this keg I just threw the leaf hops in.
When I only had pellet hops I put them into a sanitized piece of stocking. A little bit of weight to sink it and all was fine.

If you just threw them in without any type of screen the last bits might get sucked up the tube.

I use a stainless ball from ebay, jam a few pellets in.
