Just About Set For 1st AG

Right, I've got all my equipment now - I just need to put it all together and give it a "dry run" (just remembered I also need to drill a load of extra hole in the H&G hop strainer)
Ive just got a delivery from Barley Bottom and am now looking for a fairly simple recipe for my first attempt. I have Marris Otter and Crystal Malt. The hops I have are Fuggles and Boadicea (apparently a replacement for Challenger). Any suggestions?

Here's a thread for my 1st brew:

I went with delboy's suggestion, 5Kg MO, 300g crystal and cascade hops. Made a luvverly pint, about 6% and smooth as you like. it has proved to be very popular. For my 2nd brew i went 4kg Mo, and 500g crystal, with Boadicea hops. its just gone into keg, so can't tell you how it went. Personally i recomend the single hop experiment, its given me an idea what cascade taste like, and i will be able to compare to the Boadicea. I reckon if you replace the Cascade with Boadicea in my recipe you shouldn't go too wrong. just measure the IBUs. My brew is quite low on hops, which is how i like it. you may want to change that if you like hoppy beer.

Good luck, and welcome to the dark side...

I like the idea of using single hops as I dont really any idea of the flavours or aromas they will create. That recipe looks simple enough to me. Now to check out the hops calculator...

Ok, I reckon that adding 28g of Boadicea (AA 7.6%) will give me 25 IBU's which sounds about right. I presume this is the weight that I add for the full 90 minute boil. If so, how do I work out the later addition of hops?

Something like 30g at 90 mins, then 10g at 15 mins then another 10g at flame out would give you a conservative but well balanced profile. I'd be tempted to up the IBUs a little and the aroma considerably, but then I like hoppy beers and always wish I'd put in more.

I use this site to calculate IBUs:

http://www.rooftopbrew.net/ibu.php

just be aware that its a US site, so u need to convert to US gallons.

However I'm sure there is a lot more to it than that, wot with hops doing different jobs depending on how long they are in the boil. Not had enough time to experiment with that yet, it it'll come. I quite enjoy the science side of it tbh
