Advice on final volume

Post by Ranting Lad » Sat Oct 25, 2008 1:59 pm

Hello,
I am after some advice - I have just transferred the wort to the fermenter. The volume is 21 litres. I was aiming for a 5 gallon batch so should I top up with boiled and cooled water to the required volume or should I leave as is. The gravity at the moment is 1.042@25C

Any help is much appreciated.

at 1.042 I'd leave well alone, it aint the end of the world if you miss a few pints, but if you get 23 ltr of watery beer that may be

Much will depend upon where your beer is headed. If it's going into a Corny then you've got enough, so leave it alone.

As things stand, your gravity is probably 1043 @ 20C. If you add 1 litre of cooled boiled water this would bring it down to 1041. If you add 2 litres it would be down to 1039. Remember that you will be diluting flavours as well as strength.

Have you ever calibrated your fermenter? Quite often the factory markings are way out.
