Another childish question

Post by Pete » Sun Oct 22, 2006 12:30 pm

Hi

I seem to have over-reached my 1040 aim and am nearer 1050 however I only have 3 3/4+ gallons and wanted 5.

Can I add unboiled tap water to get nearer to my 1040/5 gallons target? This would also cool it down (I have not got a wort cooler yet).

Best regards

Pete

Fermenting happily

Hi Everyone

I awoke this morning to a frothy head on my 4.5 gallons (thanks for the campden tablet tip, DaaB).

I read in a book I can store some froth in the freezer for the next brew, anyone tried this?

I've tried this Pete and found it to work very badly. Perhaps it was something in the way I did it but I did use Glycerine. I think I posted about it somewhere here.

I did manage to get a starter going with thawed yeast but it must have taken about 3 days before I say any significant activity in the starter bottle.

I now store in the fridge like Jim et al.

Going back on the post slightly. Pete, when you are taking a hydromter reading, you will need to adjust for temperature.

Most Hydromteres are calibrated at 20C.

I don't know what the formula is to adjust for temperature, but there are plenty of tools available on the web. Personally I use Beersmith. If you are looking for something 'free' then the trial version of Promash (complicated to use IMHO) will be enough as it never expires (just has limitations)

Thanks PieOhPah

I shall definitely try that Promash software.

I shall also stick to the fridge rather than the freezer (read it in the Camra guide to home brewing, I think).

Not sure I am ready for the software yet. Lots of buttons...

Yes, I found the Promash software very off-putting and I write software. Beersmith is much better in that respect but time limited trial - although it is still partially useful once the trial has ended.

You can't use Beersmith after the trial has ended (unless you delete the registry keys).

Good point, didn't spot the 45 day limit.
