My first full mash attempt - Help
Another childish question
Hi
I seem to have over-reached my 1040 aim and am nearer 1050 however I only have 3 3/4+ gallons and wanted 5.
Can I add unboiled tap water to get nearer to my 1040/5 gallons target? This would also cool it down (I have not got a wort cooler yet).
Best regards
Pete

Fermenting happily
Hi Everyone
I awoke this morning to a frothy head on my 4.5 gallons (thanks for the campden tablet tip, DaaB).
I read in a book I can store some froth in the freezer for the next brew, anyone tried this?

Re: Fermenting happily
I've tried this Pete and found it to work very badly. Perhaps it was something in the way I did it but I did use Glycerine. I think I posted about it somewhere here.Pete wrote:I read in a book I can store some froth in the freezer for the next brew, anyone tried this?
I did manage to get a starter going with thawed yeast but it must have taken about 3 days before I say any significant activity in the starter bottle.
I now store in the fridge like Jim et al.
Going back on the post slightly. Pete, when you are taking a hydromter reading, you will need to adjust for temperature.
Most Hydromteres are calibrated at 20C.
I don't know what the formula is to adjust for temperature, but there are plenty of tools available on the web. Personally I use Beersmith. If you are looking for something 'free' then the trial version of Promash (complicated to use IMHO) will be enough as it never expires (just has limitations)
