what size mash-tun??

Post by beesley121 » Fri Nov 14, 2008 12:01 pm

Hi guys,

Im looking at buying a coolbox for use as a mash-tun but as im intending to brew in future 10 gallon batches, im not sure whats the minimum size I will need!! Im not sure if im batch sparging or fly sparging yet as im still looking at the advantages/disadvantages.

Ive seen a 47 litre coolbox for 35.00 including delivery, they also do one the same size but with a patented insulation that says it will keep the temp down for 4-5 days, so this might be a good one as a mashtun. that box is 40.00

For that price you might well look at using the nordic optical bain marie type coolbox.
If you look around on the forum you'll find a lot of discussion about them. They come in various sizes but I suspect something around 30-50L would be adequate.
They're often available on ebay.

I use a 24l tun for 23l batches it's ok for continuous sparging but really on the limit for
batch sparging, so 47l would be ok except for batch sparging. Others who batch sparge
10 Gal batches will more than likely chime in but I would look at 60l+

I'd agree with Scooby. My 32l mash tun is going to be overwhelmed if I chuck 10Kg of grain in there for a 10g brew and attempt to batch sparge it. Sure, I could get away with it if fly sparging but I prefer to batch sparge currently. Indeed I shall be looking for a 70l-80l NO bain marie after Xmas to enable me to do 10g brews and still batch sparge. 30l-50l is nowhere near enough for batch sparging in my opinion.
