Using Frozen hops

Post by myke2008 » Fri Nov 21, 2008 9:22 am

Hi,

I have frozen my hops from my last AG and wanted to know how I go about using them again.

Do i just use what I need frozen and put straight into the boiler? (If so anyone know how to adjust the weight for weighing?)
Do I defrost all of it use what i want then put it back in the freezer?
Do I defrost only what i need for this batch and leave the rest in the freezer?

Remove hops from freezer,
Weigh,
Use,
Squeeze air out of remaining hops,
Seal,
back in freezer.
Done

The beauty is that the hops dont seem to go rock hard in the freezer so theres no real need to de-frost them for any length of time; maybe just an hour to dry out any moisture in case this effects the weight.

I freeze mine ready weighed, in one ounce and half ounce portions so I can just open the packet and use. I used to vac pac them before freeezing but it is such a hassle that nowadays I just put them in a bag and squeeze out as much air as possible.

I then seal them using one of these

I find this way of sealing keeps the air out better than trying to tie them, or use twist ties
