Yeast hasn't started yet, bad batch?
Yeast hasn't started yet, bad batch?
Pitched my Nottingham yeast on Friday night at 11:30pm into correct temp wort at around 18degrees.
It hasn't formed a yeast head yet I'm I'm getting worried! Is this batch ruined?

Hi Chris,
I'm suffering from exactly the same thing with my Cole Porter. I pitched at about 8.30pm on Friday with Wyeast 1028 London Ale yeast - although I didn't make a starter as the "Activator" packs say they can be pitched directly. Absolutely nothing as of 9am this morning. I've just repitched it with a pack of S04. I wonder if the yeast was dead in the pack. Even without a starter, I should be seeing some activity by now.
I don't think it should have any effect as longsas the wort has been kept sealed from any contamination. If I were you, I'd repitch now and give it another 24 hours to see what happens.

Took a quick look and it seems to be doing something, just taking a while to get started.
Fingers crossed it keeps it up.

Last 2 batches with nottingham I have done took over 24 hours before it came to life. Seems the nottingham is a little lazy with the current batch.

Try Windsor, LoL, there should be a warning on the packet, "Pitch Yeast And Stand Well Back". Oh, and move any carpet's within a 2mtr radius!!
I've never seen anything like that stuff in all my years of brewing!

Chris - has your Nottingham got going yet? I pitched some in my first AG last night and there wasn't much sign of life early this morning; granted, 6-7 hours at a lowish temp (18) might not be enough to see a flying start, but personally I stil feel a nervous!ChrisG wrote:Thats good to know then, dont want this one to be poured away as I'm really looking forward to it.Damfoose wrote:Last 2 batches with nottingham I have done took over 24 hours before it came to life. Yeah seems to be doing its stuff....this morning it had the makings of a yeast head so I hope t keeps going.
I think the temperature was too low and I'm used to S04 and wasn't sure what to expect.
Hope yours starts soon!

Think there's something in this - leave things well alone for a day while you go to work and whilst your too busy not thinking about it it gets cracking...
