At last!!

Post by Robdog » Tue Dec 09, 2008 4:57 pm

Well ive had my AG kit for about 2 weeks now but with having the flu and trying to get a ift to the local DIY shop as i dont drive im going to do my first AG brew tomorrow. Im doing Gail Porter so im hoping to get some good results.

Ive had a game with my Immersion chiller as the taps we have dont really have a lip on so the mixer tap connecter leaks everywhere so ive just tested it and had to get the misses to stand there with about 4 towels around the tap so it doesnt spray everywhere. The first test i found it was leaking a bit at the water inlet side so i had to loosen the jubalee clip and push the hose up the adapter a bit more which seems to have done the trick. I cant believe i couldnt find a suitable hose pipe tap connector for my style of tap it seems rediculous to have to stand there for 20-30 mins with towels round the tap tryng to stop it spraying everywhere.

Me thinks my mate the plumber can pay us a visit soon and get some better taps fitted or maybe get an outside tap fitted.

Another thing ive noticed is as soon as the elements in my boiler got a bit wet the changed colour, almost black they have gone i hope this is normal. The misses rekons it is like so ill take her word for it.

After doing alot of reading and also posting questions on here i think ive got the jist of it all worked out in my head so i cant wait to start.

Wish me luck and ill post tomorrow when im all done. I was going to take some pics but i want to concentrate on what im doign as its my first brew so ill do pics wheni do another one.

I've got one of these for my tap, perhaps it'll suit yours?

My taps are similar to these. I know a few people who've got the same taps and they all say they have problems with hose pipes leaking.

Well mine also sprays a bit, the solution?

See the measuring jug on top of the tap? :=P

Looking at the tap you just posted there, it's quite square so the connector I posted might work? You basically place it over the tap and screw the big grey plastic bit down on to the tap until it's tight

Ill have to have a look for one of those thanks alot.

Im just sorting my recipe out.

Ive done my water calcs so hopefully all will run smoothly tomorrow. I just hope my mash tun is big enough for this recipe. Its 5.3kg grain bill and im batch sparging so i think ill be ok.

Thanks i did have a similar idea. For this brew i need to add 9.5 ltrs for my first batch and 15.25 for my second batch. So say i can only get 8 ltrs in the first batch and say 12 ltrs in my second batch i could then just add the remaining 4.75 ltrs as a third batch if that makes sense.

Knowing me though thats probabaly my own long winded way of doing what you just suggested lol.

I have taps like yours and have the same connector as paulstats in the first post, they work fine. I like the self cutting washing machine outlet though.

I did a similar thing to this by plumbing in a garden tap which has the same thread as the tap pictured. I fitted the hoselock male connector and female connectors to my IC and another short length of hose. The length of hose makes it so easy to fill the HLT and clean out the boiler. And I dont have to deal with any comedic moments when the connector comes loose from the tap and soaks the room.

Get yourself a nice water butt cheaper than taps and this time of year the water is nice and cold
Fermenter(s): Lambic, Wheat beer, Amrillo/Cascade Beer
Cornys: Hobgoblin clone, Four Shades Stout, Wheat Beer, Amarillo/Cascade Ale, Apple Wine, Cider, Damson Wine, Ginger Beer

Hi Robdog, I had the same problem, but I found a very easy and cheap :D solution.
If your washing machine tap is conveniently located (like mine is under the sink), then disconnect the cold washing machine hose (turn the tap off first), and use as Chris X1 suggests, as hosepipe connector, screw it directy on the tap, connect the hosepipe using a jubilee clip, no more leaks.
Testing my new IC on it this weekend :D
