HELP!
HELP!
My latest AG is in the fermenter, an upgrade to my stock "Wherryman's Ale". However due to "issues" with the much maligned H&G strainer I have quite a lot of hop crud in it from the boil. What is the best way forward. Is it possible to filter effectively at this stage? I plan to take off to the Secondary tonight and will add finings.
Re: HELP!
Gravity always wins!
I'd say not to worry too much about the crud as you'll leave most of it behind in the primary when you siphon to secondary anyway, then if you leave it nice and cool for a couple of weeks, the rest of it should fall out of suspension as well. Finings would definitely help, but in this cold weather you might not even need them as long as you're not in too much of a hurry to drink it.

Re: HELP!
I am with Adm on this one most of the crud will remain in the primary as it does not stay in suspension like the yeast, if you use finings before this you won't get enough active yeast in the secondary and the fermentation will stall. Weather is on our side if you are a shed brewer as it clears well in the cold
Re: HELP!
fermentation is at 8 days now, and pretty much complete. Started at 1060, now at 1014, may go a point or two lower but not much.
I'm inclined to shove into secondaries, add the finings, touchwood and whistle. At this stage it's much the best brew I'v produced. Dare I say it I may even have perfected my recipe, at least to my own satisfaction. I don't want to lose this batch.

Re: HELP!
sad to report that this has not improved.
no off tastes, smells OK but foggier than Stansted in Autumn, so come tomorrow there will be a ritual disposal of 8 gallons. Never mind, the shed drain will be cleaner than at anytime since I installed it!
The first brew I have lost, not a happy feeling. It also leaves me with only my Barleywine to drink this Christmas, I can already feel the hangover coming on.

If it tastes and smells ok i`d be inclined to leave it a bit longer and see what happens, i`ve had a few cloudy brews thatconfused wrote:sad to report that this has not improved.

have tasted fine, i drank them all the same and they tasted good, seems a shame to tip a nice tasting beer down the drain.
The last brew i did (Monday) i forgot to put the hop strainer into the boiler (doh) but when i drained into the FV not one single
bit of gunk came out, i put a sieve below the tap as i was expecting a lot of hops to come out, but the hop bed actually worked
very well for once, mind you there were over a 100g of hops in at the end, so it built up a nice big hop bed.
