All grain computer programs

Post by Garth » Sat Nov 18, 2006 10:45 pm

I'm sure this subject was raised before, and maybe it should be in equipment, (mods please move if you see fit) but anyway, those who use a program, what are you using? She says I can have one for Chrimbo, lucky me eh?

Which one should I buy and why? Promash - BeerSmith - BeerTools any more?

bearing in mind I can be a numpty sometimes and don't understand certain things. (brain cells killed off ages ago)

Hi Garth,

I posted a poll about this on the old forum but can't find it on here so it must have slipped though Andy's net when he imported the posts...

Here's a link to the old forum post.

Personally I would avoid Pro Mash - I found it looked outdated and difficult to use. It has a demo so download it and give it a go

Beersmith was a great program. Easy to use, has a ton of features. Again, this has a demo to download and try.

Beer Tools Pro - It doesn't have as many features but in my opinion it looks the shiniest. It is quite easy to get to grips with and is quite interactive with the accompanying site - you can download recipes straight from the program (although you need them stored in your account on the site to access them).

While BTP has no demo, it is IMO the best of the 3. It doesn't have as many features as Beersmith, but most of those features won't be used anyway.

BTP is also getting constant updates and the developer is in constant contact with the users via the forum. You can post suggestions and there is a chance it will make it into the next update (one of my suggestions has already been added!)

Since being released 2 months ago, there have already been 6 updates with improvements, fixes and new features.

Unfortunately of the 3, this one is the only one that has no demo (although it is being discussed).

I would personally advise BTP...

I can't fault promash myself, it does everything I want plus lots of stuff I don't use. Easy to get to grips with and as for it's looks can't say im bothered, it looks fine to me!

Download the demo version and see what you think.

I've also tried beersmith, which is also a very good programme but I ended up buying promash as I simply preferred using it.

Horses for courses here me thinks.
I use BeerSmith and I am more than happy with it.
I have heard people complain that it is very american but it isfairly easy to input all your own values for equipment and ingredients.
Get an eval copy and give it a try.

I tried Beersmith and Promash and ended up buying the latter. As Jon said, horses for courses. :)
