Brewing DL's Directors tomorrow.
Brewing DL's Directors tomorrow.
Brewing tomorrow at short notice. Anything else I need to know about the recipe? Got all the bits I need, just hoping the weather is going to be kind.

Ok! just a quick update mash completed just going to start the sparge. No pictures this time i'm afraid. Just look at my last lot as it's exactly the same set up.
One thing DL doesn't mention is about the addition of the Barley syrup does this go in for the whole of the boil? Hope Bigster is about to answer this one

Added the barley syrup at the start of the boil along with the soft light brown sugar, boiling away merrily as I type. Fermenter sterilizing as well, just got the rotten job of sterilzing the counter flow cooler. I pour a few measuring jug fulls of solution through and hope for the best
I do run plenty of water through after use though so hope that that helps keep in resonably clean.

That's about what I do - about 5 litres or iodophor through it then flushed with cold water. It's a bit of a worry not to be able to see inside it to be sure it's clean but so far has been ok...Western Brewer wrote:just got the rotten job of sterilzing the counter flow cooler. Finally finished. I collected about 4 1/4 gallons for the boil and after 90 minute boil I had around 3 gallons left. Dave Line said to top it up to 5 gallons which I did. Wort OG before dilution was about 1070. I first made it up to 4 gallons and it was still about 1060 made the full lenght up and got 1044. Target was 1046 so pleased.
Did have a cock up or two though. Forgot the irish moss, is this a total disaster. Then when tidying up trying to carry to much stuff back to the garage dropped my hydrometer and of course it shattered, in the dark trying to find as many bits as I can so the moggies don't cut their feet
Laughing now about it though.
Looking forward to the end result as I had a pint of Directors not long ago and had forgotten how much I like it.
Good brew day on the whole though. Started about 11.15 Mashed for just under 2 hours, sparge took about 30 minutes, boiled for 90 minutes colloing took about 45 minutes. Finished just after 5pm. Oh yeah! emptied the spent hops into the compost bin got back to the house. Where was the hop strainer. You've guessed it
Never tidy up in the dark!

Good effort WB.
I've just put my Directors (a sort of Wheeler recipe) in the cornie today. I left the primary for 7days and then transferred to a barrel to clear for 4 days (I used some beerclear to speed the process along). I have now transferred into the cornie and it is already looking and tasting great.

Cheers Guys! Another thought! I just added a sachet of Safale 04 yeast to the wort. I've got another pack, do you think it's worth adding that as well or will one pack be ok. Did'nt get time to make a starter up yesterday so just sprinked the yeast on top of the wort.
Just eaten and now feel knackered. Hard work this brewing

I find that on my cfc the hose on the water outlet can be pushed into the wort inlet when the hose is warm, therefore this is how I flush my cfc out after use, I can give it a thorough blast of hot water for about 5 mins, before I use it again I sterilise it in a fv, to ensure it is flushed out properly I repeat the process only this time using cold water, no problems after 11 years use.just got the rotten job of sterilzing the counter flow cooler.
