Brewing Tim Taylor Landlord today 8)
About half an hour into mash.

Very excited as first time using spinny sparge arm - will do some photos if I can lay my hands on the camera.

Also I'm not doing a 'water treatment' this time (except for Campdem tablet). For my other AGs I've follwed wheeler's recommendation of 12g Gypsum and 3g of Epsom salts in 25 ltrs. Noticed slightly harsh bitter flavour in my last finished brew which I'm guessing may be down to excessive Gypsum; anyway, we'll see what happens this time.

Also first using hop pellets (not a choice but all the shop fella had).
Recipe to follow when I've worked out hopping rates

Cheers guys 8)

I LOVE the spinny sparge arm :D ; it made the brew so much easier. I did have to turn it off and on a bit as it went a bit fast at points (I used my second boiler as the HLT), but this was not that much of a hassle. I'll have to get a clamp to adjust the flow through the tubing. Got a marginally better effiency as well (ended up with 1045 instead of 1042 based on a predicted 70% efficiency). May have a think about a false bottom   to cut back on dead space in the mt.

Huge amounts of gunk ended up in the fermenter thanks to the pellets; hopefully this won't cause too much of a problem. Also dropped the yeast sachet in the fermenter as well; removed quickly, but hope it didn't contaminate the beer

Unfortunately couldn't find my camera so no photos either.

...oh the recipe (for my records  )

5 kg Pale
73 gms Styrian Goldings (Pellets; 4.1 aaus) 90 mins - 25 IBUs
25 gms Fuggles (whole, 5 aaus) 90 mins - 10 IBUs
15 gms Goldings (15 mins)
Irish Moss
Campden tablets for chlorine (no other water treatments)

SO4 Yeast

As my Brupaks boiler (which I used as my HLT) only has an on/off tap, no flow rate control, I used cloths pegs to step down the flow rate to my Spinny Sparger.

As below:

I have only used hop pellets twice and this was when they were supplied in a kit. These were used for dry hopping. Settled out of the beer quite quickly and were trapped by the yeast cake. Nothing to worry about in my experience :)

I doubt it, the amount of gunk will look a lot less once it's had a couple of days to settle down after fermentation. I guess I was wrong about the whole hops filtering it out, then

It did filter it out for a while, but then it seemed to get quite clogged so I had stir around the strainer to get the wort (and the gunk) to flow out the tap.
