The wife has gone to work and, having the house to myself and the cats I felt the urge to get another brew on. I recently got hold of some Amarillo hops from H and G and as I am very partial to commercial brews with these hops in, I decided to have a bash. Here's the recipe, sorry about the imperial measures, I'm a dinosaur and haven't got time to convert them to metric at the moment.
9 lbs Maris Otter
8 oz Crystal
4oz amber
This is now mashing nicely at 66C with 5.2 PH buffer added. If everything goes to plan, I will mash for 90 mins then sparge to just over 4 gallons. The wort will be boiled for 90 mins with 1 1/2 oz Amarillo with a further 1/2 oz added 5 mins before the end of the boil. I will run this off onto 12 oz cane sugar and make up to 5 gallons before adding Danstar Nottingham. So far everything has been trouble free........

Rolling Hitch from the Darwin Brewery uses Amarillo, and damn tasty it is too:

It's available from *whisper* ASDA
I seem to recall Tribs made an Amarillo beer which was first wort hopped.
Sorry to hijack the thread Bryggmester, but I felt I had to announce my love for Rolling Hitch

I was *whisper*, in an Asda at the weekend and bought a bottle of this and thought it was very drinkable. Almost a flowery after taste so guess that is the hops. Also was pleased to see a 'produced locally' sticker on the shelf and above it Battersea Brewery Porter which I also bought, again very nice.

Tribs did an Amarillo IPA that I copied. It was pretty good. I personally don't think i'd bother with FWH again but it's a good experiment.

Crouch Vale do a single hop strong bitter, c. 5% called, surprisingly enough "Amarillo". It is one of my favourites and came out beer of the festival at the Colchester CAMRA beer festival a couple of years ago. The brew is going according to plan and is now resting before I run it off into the fermenting bin.

All went without a hitch and the SG was 50 @ 21c so I'm a happy bunny!
I shall post how things turn out in two or three weeks. I shall certainly keep an eye out for Rolling Hitch. I hope to get the chance to sup some CV Amarillo at the Chelmsford beer festival tomorrow, if they have some on.
I am not sure what first wort hopping is; I can't remember having heard the term before, can someone enlighten me?

I've just got my hands on some amarillo as well and am excited to brew something with it. I was thinking of doing a simple APA like this:
6 lbs. LME
1 lb. pale malt
6 oz. Crystal 60L
1 oz. Amarillo 60 min boil
.25 oz. Cascade 60 min
.75 oz. Cascade 15 min
1 oz. Amarillo 0 min
Safale us56
Anybody familiar with how cascades and amarillo go together? I assume, as they are similar, that they'll blend fine.
