Did you know the pub? The regulars were an eclectic mix of intellectuals, Uni professors, students, musicians, etc. The pub quiz was legendary, set by York Uni Dons.

Nope - didn't have a "local" in the city. The uni campus had six bars and we mostly stuck to those. In those days I was a cider drinker only!

Still had a great time though, top uni IMO, well respected in the uni lists and a lovely campus.

Ahhh you missed much. There was the evening spent in Walker's Bar drinking the finest pints of Old Peculier ever. It was so good it was religious, and we just sat in virtual silence and savoured. Never had any as good since. (circa 1983)
York is a good place, the number of students that stay on to live and work there after leaving Uni bears that out...my sister being one of them.

It's a little bit immature but i'm getting a bit of a malt-whisky aroma from this beer - is anyone else getting that from the golden promise?

Well as Golden Promise is the primary malt used by loads of distilleries then I guess there will be some common flavours/aromas discernable to the cultured nose/palette

That is exactly what my wife said about my Scottish 80/- made with Golden Promise.
Just bottled that batch last night.

It's nice but quite strange. I don't smell any whisky from TTL or any of Caledonian's Golden Promise beers. Maybe it ages out.
