taking sample from f/v

Post by akka lakka » Fri Oct 12, 2012 11:16 am

What is the best way of taking a sample from f/v to taste without contaminating the brew that is easy to sterilise.

Cheers joe.

I use a plastic syringe with a 6 or 8" length of stiff tube connected to the nozzle. I remove the air lock and dip the tube in to draw off the sample, and it's easy to sanitise.
Best wishes

i put taps on all my FVs for this reason, which also facilitates easy (no suck) racking to bottling bucket/barrel/cornie.
dazzled, doused in gin..

+1
Preferably with spout you can sanitise & fix silicone hose on easily
eg Plastic Tap from TMM

+1. Me 'n' all - I use a turkey baster. Throw it a pan of boiling water for about 5 mins to sterilise.

ditto taps I have never considered not using taps to be honest.

Its actually quite interesting being able to take a shots worth a day and see how the beer changes over the 12-14 days its in there. I did it religiously last time round and you can literally follow the steps of the different documented flavors appearing then disappearing again etc.

All I would say is dont judge the beer... what it tastes like in the FV has little to no impact on how it will taste. Having said that I am starting to get a feel for it but you just never know.

+1 for a turkey baster, sterilise/sanitise using normal solution/precedures used for everything else.

Turkey baster, sanitized with starsan every time.

I (probably unnecessarily) worry about properly cleaning taps on FV, i suppose lifting the lid to take a sample is probably worse #-o

No Taps are the single biggest cause of infection so in my opinion don't have a place in a home brewery.

To be fair jonnyt I have never had an infection that I know off but when taking a tap off an fv to fit it to a barrel I stripped it back and was blown away by the state of its innereds. You may well of persuaded me to go tap less there next time I need one. Maybe...

I just slide mine forward so the edge is clear of the shelf and take the sample from the tap.
