fermentation temp

Post by neil smith » Mon Feb 18, 2013 6:42 pm

hi all, i have a stainless steel fish tank heater for my fv, it will cut in at 18c and out at 22c, is this to wider span or will it still ferment at that, i have heard some yeasts will tolerate a wide temp range but not sure what ones any ideas.
cheers Neil

I don't think it'll be too much of a problem, when I started brewing my FV was kept in the spare room, and the temperature obviously fluctuated and I ended up with some decent beers.

S-33 will work fine in that temperature range

Stay clear of S-33, this is a lousy yeast. Anyway, most of ale strains will work ok within this range. Notty, Mauri Ale, S-04, both of them. Just be sure to not go over 22c with fermentation temp.

Can you turn the temperature down on your heater?

As said, it will be fine with quite a few yeasts. Consider buying a cheap plastic trug sightly larger than your FV. Place your FV into water in the trug and heat that water to avoid needing to sterilise the heater. Further, with a bit of manual intervention you can get a more suitable and even temperature for fermentation. Don't assume a constant temperature is the ideal for fermentation.
While there are better methods to control fermentation temperature to make a better beer, there are also many other factors of greater importance.

yes i can turn it down but will still have the 4c variation, and my fv is to big at 220 litres to put in a container to heat.

Not what I would consider as homebrew.
