Is it too clear!?

Post by markbatten » Sat May 19, 2007 8:23 am

Having attempted a mini mash last weekend for the first time I left the wort to ferment under airlock (SG1040). On returning home from work yesterday (I work away from home Mon-Fri) I noticed the bubbling had ceased from the airlock. Checking the FG it had reached 1006 and was "crystal clear" barring a few floating yeasty looking lumps. I bottled and primed the beer as normal. On checking this morning there seems to be nothing going on in the bottle when I expected to see at least a couple of small bubbles forming. Did I leave the beer too long in the fermenter or will it start the secondary fementation? I am not used to kit beer being so clear at the end of fermentation. Does AG always fall clear this quickly or did I do something wrong in the early stages?

You generally don't see any 'movement' in the bottle apart from some yeast slowly gathering at the bottom, the only way to tell if its carbonated is to pop one open.

I used 1/2 of a 6 gram sachet Muntons Premium Gold in a 5 litre brew. The starter was going mad when it was pitched at 25 degrees.

I always bottle one in PET, that way you can see if it is clearing down and give it a squeeze to see if it has carbonated.
Where's the sampling fun in that :D
