Temperature Controlled Fermenting Cupboard Questions

Post by daddies-beer-factory » Sat Jun 15, 2013 10:37 pm

Can anyone advise on how to build a temperature controlled fermenting cupboard please ?
I have seen the photo of Jims on our site but I need an idiots guide to the components I need (ie what cools it down & what warms it up )
I want to build a double (so I can ferment 2 X 25 L FV at a time)
Jims one just looks like a kitchen cupboard with a couple of temperature components screwed to the inside wall.
I think this maybe more efficient / smaller than trying to use a converted fridge.
any help is welcome !

As nobody has replied yet I thought I would chuck in my 2 pence worth. Being practically useless, constructing a fermentation cupboard would be quite alarming to me and all the more so when a tall larder fridge a tube heater and an STC 1000 can be had for less than £50. I can't see that if you go for sufficient insulation that you will get a footprint a lot smaller, so for me it would be a no-brainer, fridge every time.

If you don't require cooling then it would be worthwhile. I.e. you had a cellar. Or perhaps a garage. Not sure how hot my garage gets over the summer.

These cheap larder fridges are hard to come by. Everyone seems to he doing it though so it must just be there's less on offer down here in Cornwall.

As Orlando has said. Get yourself a fridge and an STC1000 tenp control with a small tube heater from toolstation

I got a couple off Gumtree, which seems to get newly added ones every day or so. The first one I bought was too small, so make sure you check your internal dimensions first; there is no standard size for fridges.

Thats great - thanks guys ! I didn't know you could buy these fridges - I assumed people had taken a fridge freezer & converted it ( cut the middle partition away )
So I will get me one of these "tall larder fridges" of fleabay. I assume you need to make a sturdy middle shelf from plywood to support the extra weight of a full 25 L fermenting vessel ( I dont fancy 25 KG on a standard glass fridge shelf ) - & make sure the heat/cold can circulate .
does anyone know how the Temp Controller controls the tube heater & the fridge ? - & do you need a fan to circulate the air ?
Thanks in advance :bonk

And expect lots of condensation inside the fridge!
