Brewday 22 April

Post by vaudy » Sat Apr 21, 2007 7:12 pm

Brewing a 50 litre batch of Timoth Taylor clone (B.Y.O.R.A.A.H.), this is my standard bitter - might just manage one pint before running out tonight, then I am only left with a few pints of mild (last brew that I did).

This time I am using Golden Promise instead of Maris Otter, will this make much difference to the finished beer?, if so will it be for the better.
I have always been sucessful with this recipe.

Will treat the water tonight late on and insulate the boiler ready for an early start in the morning.

I will have to get my act togeather with regard to not having dry spells.
In the past I have not bothered brewing in the summer periods, due to the ferment temperature being to high, however I am going to address this with a mod to a chest freezer, mentioned previously, enabling cooler ferments and will bottle the beer enabling slight chilling prior to drinking.

Will let you know how I go on tomorrow, and look forward to hearing any views with regard to changing the malt to golden promise.

Cheers :)

Is it Timothy Taylor Landlord? This is one of my favourite drinks and I have replicated it with good results albeit with the malt extract version, Anyway all the best to you and hope you produce a good pint!!!!!

The brewing session was good, managed 50 litres @ o.g. 1050, eff 86%.

The golden promise malt gave the same results as marris otter, colour, efficiency, sparge performance. I will have to wait until its ready to see if using this malt changed the taste, for the better thus justifying the extra cost.

This efficiency is being achieved regularly, resulting in the og being a lot higher than the original recipe, next time I will alter the malt bill accordingly, my barrels can't cope with any extra volume and I prefer to end up with the og stated.
You can guarantee when I do this the mash efficiency will drop and I will end up with less beer.

cheers

It might taste a bit different, not better, not worse, if you notice at all, especially with a hop accented beer. I think the flavour differences between strains of barley used for pale malt are subtle. Maris Otter is generally recognised as the best beer brewing barley in the world, so I doubt wether you'd notice an improvement as such with Golden Promise (a Whisky barley).

In terms of replicating a beer like TTL, much more important is the hopping regime, yeast strain and its handling, and fermentation temperature regime. I find it amusing when TTL cloners get hung up on malt variety, but ignore those far more important factors.

Have just had one or two pints of the TTL, with the variation of Golden promise malt.

The brew is darker in colour and I can notice a slight variation with regard tast, I feel that the smokeiness of the malt is evident (this could be my imagination) for the better.
I am going to try another variation by using 5% crystal malt next brew this Saturday.
Will keep you informed.
