clear stout?

Post by louthepoo » Tue Jun 05, 2007 9:25 pm

I'm going to be kegging my stout in the next couple of days and wondered if i need to put finings in? I know i have done for lighter beers where it needs clearing but stout is as black as black can be so wont neccessary benefit from clearing for looks wise but does it help get rid of any little bits that are floating around or am i asking a silly question?

it'll take the yeast out of suspension, i normally add finings but didn't bother with the stout i did.

I add finings to all my beers including stouts. Just because a beer is dark doesn't mean it should be cloudy. A stout or porter is actually very dark red. If you shine a light through a pint you should see a clear, deep garnet color. In the end it is your call but I love to see that color.

This can also depend on the yeast you use some clear very well unaided some don't.

Good point, the stout that i made and didn't use finings on was fermented with S04 which does a great job of settling so i felt i didn't need them.

I used S-04.

I'm kegging it tonight, would it be drinkable by sunday if i used the finings or not?

Got a party at a mates and he hasn't given me any notice to make one so thought about taking the stout. If its not ready or do itself justice i wont take it!

Personally I don't use finings (although I may do in the future).

I would always advise letting your stout clear. Ever since I poured a pint early and saw what could only be described as dark sewer water in my glass, I have left my stout to clear.
