Sparging grain

Post by yeastandlist » Wed Jun 20, 2007 7:54 pm

 Hi there all you malty people I am going to have a go at my first all super dooper grain hop brew. I have successfully made in excess of 30 kits and have now brought the equipment for a grain brew. One question. I am going to buy a watering can to sparge my grain after mashing. I can not find out, in books, on the internet or in the shop how much liquid should be used for sparging. I was thinking of using 4 litres of boiling water out of a sterilised watering can. Would this be okay for most receipies? Ready to go except for this one point.

Have you thought about perhaps going for a batch sparge instead of a fly sparge?

I used to used the old watering can method, but it tends to be a very long and boring process. I started doing a double batch sparge a while back and find it so much easier and less time consuming. Also the I find the difference in efficiency isn't really that bad at all, usually only around 3-5%
