Re: Pliny The Elder
I made this clone last year (never had the original, stupidly passed up on a bottle in Beirkonig, Amsterdam some years back). I have read about 'perceived' bitterness but when fresh this was really quite enamel-strippingly bitter and the hop profile was overwhleming. I struggled with it, possibly the due to the sheer amount of CTZ as I have loved heavy hitters with similar amounts of hops such as Heady Topper, Double Galaxy etc.
Re: Pliny The Elder
tenemus,
With about 200g of boiling hops this was my worry. Has anyone else made this. I've got the ingredients but not due to brew for a couple of weeks yet.

Re: Pliny The Elder
ditto, I've never head the original but interested to see how others found it. I am a bit scared of it tbh.
Re: Pliny The Elder
I'm slightly tempted to brew "Pliney The Elder's Daughter" and half the boiling hops!
I'm going to go out and watch clouds now.

Re: Pliny The Elder
Next time I would make Pliny with CO2 hop extract. I used it for the Heady clone - theres less wastage in hop trub and I found it leads to a cleaner, smoother bitterness if that makes sense. I really like it for the big IPAs.
Is anyone importing it to the UK yet? I had to buy mine from Yakima. Postage is the issue, but this time it was ok as I got some interesting packs of hop pellets as well.

Re: Pliny The Elder
I made this last year, it was stunning. Be warned you will lose a lot of beer to the huge amount of hops!
I used us05 yeast, was wonderful beer!

micmacmoc,
But did it strip your enamel?
Sod it, I'm just going to try it. If it's uncontrollably bitter, I've lost a few quid and a bit of brewing time.
About a week to brewday. I'll report back.
