The most grapefruit of all hops?

Post by IrishSourBeers » Thu Dec 03, 2015 5:08 pm

I've been asked to brew an IPA with pronounced grapefruit character. To me grapefruit has always been a blend of Centennial and Cascade, whereas the likes of Amarillo etc is more citrus orange.

I have to admit I'm not up to the latest and greatest hops, but I'm just wondering what other folks think.

To me Amarillo is the grapefruit bomb. I've got a single hopped golden ale with amarillo on the go now and it smells like grapefruit juice and tastes like grapefruit rind. I don't get anything like as much grapefruit from cascade or centennial and I use them a lot too, but maybe that's just me.

Cheers for the reply. The beer (Porterhouse Hop Head) that introduced me to grapefruit all those years ago is still in production, and while the beer that introduced me to Amarillo (cut with Cascade) isn't, the latter never reminded me of grapefruit. Now that I look at the recipe for HH I see there's Nugget in it too, which I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of.

(Just realised the Hops forum is probably the place for thread)

Nelson Sauvin

At the moment I'm loving Vic Secret, late in the boil, steep and dry hop.

A little grapefruit zest wouldn't hurt.
I'm just here for the beer.

Would never have classed Centennial as being Grapefruit, more flowers than a florist on Valentines day I reckon. If you can find it, Jester is a cracker. Cascade yes, but English more than the American. Always find the US one too catty.
