DaaB's Batch Sparge Calculator

Post by Calum » Mon Jul 23, 2007 2:27 pm

I have been batch sparging since last October as I find that it is the easiest system with my setup. Using this batch method meant that I tend to achieve an efficiency value of around 70%. The beers taste good so I was quite happy with the usual routine.

However, I came back from my holidays on Friday and decided to get a brew going and noticed your Batch Sparge Calculator page and thought I would give it a go. After I chucked in my figures it suggested that I wasn't collecting enough wort. Using the calculator and collecting the specified wort I managed to achieve an efficiency of some 85% which is 20% more than normal (the only difference from the instructions was that I did it over three batches and not the two).

Now the proof of the pudding will be in the drinking. What will the difference be between a 70% and an 85% brew - only time will tell. I do however have a different beer from the one I initially intended. I was looking for 23l @ 1045 but got 23l @ 1054. I would have dilutted but there is no more room in the bucket.

Isn't this hobby fascinating - we are always learning. 8)

Cheers DaaB, I certainly will get back on how the beer fairs. Initial smells in the fermenter are that it smells good. :D
