Organic grains and hops

Post by brewbrew » Fri Sep 23, 2016 12:14 pm

I'm keen to brew some beers with either all or large content of organic ingredients (I have been looking at pesticide issues in cereals - keen to drink pure beer without agrichemicals or ingredients that have been intensely produced with fertilizer run off into rivers etc).

I can buy quite a few (expensive) ready brewed commercial beers, but I'm struggling to find organic ingredients for my home brew activities.

Any ideas?

Thanks

contact the food and soil association who authorise the use of the organic label,
https://www.soilassociation.org/
imho its a meaningless paid for marketing label simply sold for profit and gain without any real meaning.
ist update for months n months..

I know you can get Organic hops but they are very expensive. Not sure who sells them?

Organic ingredients can be hard to find as most HBSs stock only a little if any. And AFAIK there is only one HBS in the States that sells only organic.
I'm just here for the beer.

I've been researching organic grains but there are few suppliers seemingly willing to sell less than 25kg at a time.

BrewUK recently quoted me for organic Maris Otter which was tempting but I seriously lack the space to store it... Anyone interested in splitting a sack with me? Am based in West London.

Maybe if there is sufficient interest we could approach a supplier and get them to package in smaller quantities?

Crisp/Warminster do a range of organic caramalts too.

Who knows anything about organic hops?

Buy the 25kg sack and rebag it into smaller 2kg or 5 kg bags. They store easier and are easy to sell on. Check if BrewUK will bag up into 5 kg bags like the malt Miller does

Hi,

We have a sack of organic pale here and are perfectly happy to bag up in 5kg poly bags. Just order the Maris Otter and add a note requesting organic. We do only have the one sack although we can easily get more if needs be.
