Malts and Grains

Post by monkeymullins » Tue Nov 08, 2016 7:26 pm

Quick question where are you guys buying your ingredients from and what are you buying? I'm about to embark in the wonderful world of All Grain brewing and wondering where is cheapest to purchase ingredients and what ingredients do you find you use the most of.

Ps I'm living in Wales (UK)

Thank you all :)

As for what you use most depends what type of beers you want to make but all will have 80-100% of a base malt either pale malt, larger malt or maris otter (except a few specialist styles. I personally like to use 5-15% crystal malt in most beers but others find it leaves it to sweet above 5% and others prefer caramalt. Dark malt is needed for darker beers but never in large amounts. I personally don't find any kind of wheat adds anything positive but others add some to most beers.

MaltMiller for me, unless I am after a Wyeast yeast. Can't fault the service - good prices, packaging and swift delivery.

You will likely mostly use a pale malt because this is the base for many beers and it is worth buying it in 25kg sacks. Try and find a local club or Facebook Group. At the Nottinghamshire Brewers Group (FB) we sometime club together to get a pallet load of sacks. At the moment I am supplying local brewers with sacks of malt from £17.50 each.

You could also try a local micro-brewery often they are willing to sell you ingredients much less than it would cost retail.

That sounds a very good price. Which brand are they? I am near/south of Nottingham but no way near FaceBook and could be very interested if you are somewhere I can pick up from. I am not in need at the moment as I have just bought from the MaltMiller.

This "Nottinghamshire Brewers Group" is it only available via FB and no other forum?

Rob.

Hi Rob

My supplier has a few bags that have been opened and resealed for their quality control. They have Simpsons Crystal and Fine Pale Malt. They are £17.50. I keep Marris Otter Pale Malt in stock @£21. I also do Nottingham Yeast and Protafloc tablets.

I have put them on here in the items for sale section.. I also list on eBay but the fees bump up the price.
I am in Hucknall near M1 J26/27 I work in Gedling NG4. If it helps. You should join our Facebook group.
PM me any time.

I usually use the Malt Miller as I can be sure they will deliver next day. The Malt is freshly crushed and they will do it fine for BIAB. The courier is DPD who give a 1 hour window.
I've also used BrewUK a few times. They seem to have upped their game and are more reliable than they were.
