I made a compost heap to avoid the problems that the OP mentions. Usually your compost is overwhelmingly lawn clippings which make it imbalanced. Mash grains still have loads of carbs in them and the two will balance out.mozza wrote:I compost mine and it breaks down quite happily

Spent grain dog treats:
4 mugs spent grains
2 mugs plain and/or wholemeal flour
2 eggs
1 tbsp peanut butter
Whizz the lot together in a food processor, divide into two, flatten into patties, wrap in clingfilm and chill for an hour, or overnight.
On a floured worktop, roll out to approx. 1/8th inch (3mm) thick.
Lay on greaseproof paper on baking trays, score with a pizza cutter.
Bake for 30 mins at 175C then reduce to 110C for a further 90 mins.
Cool on wire racks, Break into pieces and store in a lidded tin or zip topped bags.

Our last dog happily ate just spent grain. She'd eat a bowlful. One of her favourite foods was flour, she rarely stole stuff but did once lift an empty flour bag from the bin to lick out.
Clearing up after baking was easy - scrape the work surface onto the floor to join spilt flour and watch it get hoovered up.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

During the summer I spread it on the borders in the garden. In the winter (or when it's raining) I flush them down the sink

How many kilos at a time do you put into the communal sewerage system?
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Freegle/Freecycle is your friend, if your don't know anyone who keeps chickens/pigs etc.
You should find someone who's only too happy to regularly collect your grains.

6kg or so. Takes a bit of washing away but it goes eventually

My waste pipe couldn't cope with that and with me it would only go into my cesspool. How much water does it take to wash away 6 kilos of grain

It’s really not what the public sewer system is intended to handle. I know it makes it go away conveniently but sticking it in the bin would be greatly preferable in this case.

Definitely not a good idea. Apart from the potential blockage problem, it'll encourage rats.
Re: Spent grain disposal - what do you do with it?
No problem putting it down the drain. No worse that the total solids flushed down a drain by a large household in a day. I have a mate who has a waste disposal unit and all his vegetable waste goes down the sink - it's what they are designed for.
Re: Spent grain disposal - what do you do with it?
I'm not sure my border terrier could manage 10kg dog dog treats every two weeks
Re: Spent grain disposal - what do you do with it?
I used to give it to the chickens. It's surprising how much 4 of them could deal with! Even after mashing it's probably a bit like giving a child a packet of Maltesers. Now i simply chuck it on the compost heap.
