Mash tun type
If you want to do large batches what about going for a bigger bucket, the principle is the same and the extra cost will be neglibile in the grand scheme of things.Martin the fish wrote:I reckon i could squeeze 8kg mash in that. I found a nice SS round tray that fits perfectly in the bottom of my FV. As i have to go into town today i may 'accidently' find myself getting another FV.
Well I have both a picnic cool box and an old 25 litre FV, also have lots of 15mm copper pipe and fittings to make a strainer, and various brass taps and fittings.
Will start work today, having procured some camping mats yesterday.
Will the 15mm copper pipe be sufficient width?
I looked on H&G website, and the one they do looks to be 15mm....I intended to replicate theirs
cheers again

I use a Rubbermaid Cooler System with a Stainless False Bottom.......the only thing I'm thinking of adding in is a Heatstick so I can recirculate through my HLT to raise mash temp.......right now I use BeerSmith and hit my mash temps right on and may lose 1-2 F over a 60 minute mash...

Being a newbie again is interesting......
I have researched quite a bit, but it's the finer points like pipe diameter and such that keep me awake at night.

Having set up my wine gear, only to change it all along the way, I wanted to get my beer set up as good as I can from the get-go
will keep reading and keep asking.
regards and thanks again

decided to make two, one from an old 25 litre fermenting vessel, and the other from a picnic cool box.
the fermenter was wrapped (tightly) with three layers of camping mat for insulation, the picnic box was taken apart and the same camping mat material was used to add extra insulation. They both have the same king of strainer fitted inside.
My mate Karl (duffbeer) is rigging up one of my 60 litre buckets with two heating elements and a thermostat

I've got a 12 inch one of those!dartgod wrote:I use a Rubbermaid Cooler System with a Stainless False Bottom.......

I don't know if I am the only the person in the UK as I had to order mine from Northern Brewer in the US. However due to the favourable exchange rate and even including delivery it only cost me about £30 last year. I use it in a Curtec 36 litre UN keg which I insulated:
It works beautifully and there's no chance of lifting of the bottom due to its weight. It's just a shame you can't buy them over here.

I have 2x 5 gallon glass bottles - just cant find stoppers for them. I may have words as my dad got them from a pharmacutical place he worked (were used to deliver acidashbyp wrote:Mind you, the trouble I've had trying to get my hands on a 5 gallon demi... resorted to ordering a Better Bottle from a place in Devon instead.

he has been using them for winemaking for years
