Just googled THIS so I'm gonna ditch the brew :( I think its better to be safe than sorry I have only just thought that the liquid in thermometers is resilient to high temps :oops:

I was thinking that it had to be a bloody old thermometer to be a mercury one, more likely spirit without the dye, but it looks like spirit is just as bad.
