I'm lucky to live about 400yds from my LHBS and I really want to support them but at £6.50 for £3kg of MO then alas I can't (yep - 6.50!). I source from a not so local micro at £1.20/Kg, and still at that I'm a bit miffed that they don't discount whole sacks. A 40 mile round trip a couple of times a year supplies pretty much all my grain and hop needs. They charge £12/kg for hops, each of the last twice I have been they have warned that hop prices are about to double but touchwood so far they haven't

Having such a local shop is really handy, especially if come brewday minus 1 you realise you have run out of sanitiser, or your packet yeast is out of date, and I do feel guilty each time I go in but what I save going to the brewery is £60-80 each visit, that's serious money.

A mark up of around 30% is fine in my book, the normal retail trade works between 30-50% and up to 150% on furniture and such like but there is not a cat's chance in hell I'm paying 100% mark up on malt, so I go to the malster, I have to buy min 100Kg and pay €64 (Euro) for it, if the thieves dont like it then they can come on here and justify why they are charging that much, if my HBS charged that plus 30%, they would have my business, untill then........computer says NO

And don't get me started on what some people want for cornelious kegs, I ended up paying €34 plus vat and shipping, not €65 plus shipping

I've been pondering where I can my grain from cheaply myself, i've thought of two options. A local micro brewery http://www.zerodegrees.co.uk/index.php, but seeing as they're a chain I'm not sure if they would be willing to sell.

Bath Ales, which is about 2mins drive from my in laws, but they actually produce a fair amount of beer these days and I'm not sure they'd be willing to sell me grain either

hmmm thoughts

Use BarleyBottom if you can't find a local micro that will help you out. Paul's a great guy, his prices are good, delivery is a fair price and quick. His stuff is all top quality too. (Thomas Fawcett for most of it, judging by the sacks I've got here that say just that on them).

Oh - and he posts here too.

in echo of several others here, i also but my grain from a local microbrewery and pay £25 for a sack of MO and for any other grains such as crystal, chocolate, torrified etc £1 a kilo.

Its gotta be said if you can find your self a good local microbrewery and make friends, beer being the best bribe, then your on a winner.

The chap i deal with is now talking about supplying me with hops aswell as he is obviously limited in his experimentation as he "cant afford to dabble with hop varities when your making 50 gallons at a time" so fingers crossed i could be getting some nice hops too try also in exchange for a few bottles each time i brew

As has already been implied here, be very careful when naming any breweries that you buy hop/grain from. If they get specialty grains from a certain wholesaler said wholesaler could very well stop supplying them if they continue to trade 'direct' . . . . . not that anyone would indulge in such restrictive trade practices ;)
