Just about to all grain
Re: Just about to all grain
Forgive me if I'm teaching you how to suck eggs but you made no mention of any hop additions. You did add hops at some point I presume? I would seriously consider investing in a Thermos cool-box and converting it to a mash tun or alternatively bite the bullet and buy a ready made one.

Umpa, You can do exactly what you describe . . . wish I had seen this thread earlier. It is basically called No sparge brewing, and is very wasteful on grain as you have to double the grain in a recipe to get enough out to make a full sized batch. You also need a big mashing vessel
What you do is add the grain to the water, in the grain bag. (use 2.5L/Kg of grain) then after 90 minutes recirculate until 'clear' and drain into another vessel. Remove the grain bag and rinse. Then return the wort tot he boiler, measure the gravity and determine who much water to add to get the gravity you want after the boil . . . boil and away you go.
If you don't use enough grain you simply reduce the amount of water you add (Making a smally qty of beer)

Re: Just about to all grain
I am happy to report that the All grain was a success, I know its only been a couple of weeks, but aleady the beer is VERY nice, best ale I have made to date.
The grainy taste has gone, and i can only report it as awesome. The system I used may not be the best but it does work.
Will post some pictures later
Cheers

1.035 is damned good for 3Kg of grain, especially given your method of using it!

Re: Just about to all grain
1035 from 3kg, wow.
I did a brew yesterday, batch sparged for the first time (usually fly sparge). 4kg gave me 23 ltr of wort at 1038. I work that out to be about 73% efficiency. not as good as yours but good enough. I was following a recipe from GW's book and was aiming at his listed O.G. of 1035. I was happy with the result...
