It's ready crushed from WBB PoP :D

Dr Hexter is Paul the landlord at the Royal Oak in Wantage where my Mum lives, so often have a pint there or The Shoulder of Mutton ( had my first drink there many years ago at 15) when I visit her

All the malt I get from the Hogs Back Brewery is bought in pre-crushed.

What is it, and how much do they charge? Hogs Back is about 25 mins from me, in fact I sail straight past Tongham on the actual hogs back on my way to the Farnborough Homebrew shop where, bless em, they proceed to charge me over £5 per 3Kg for Warminster Maris Otter. If Hogs Back are amenable I'll buy base malt from them.

Steve - Maris Otter £2.95 per 3kg (they're always generous with the scales and you end up with approx 500g more than you ask for 8) )
They do crystal and chocolate also - can't remember prices, have them at home, will post tonight.

Hops - Fuggles and Goldings loose, prices at home also.

Yeast is free although they ask that you give a charity donation (50p).

I always give them advance notice as there's only a couple of the shop guys who do the grain selling bit! Plus if you want yeast then give at least a days notice.

Looks like the zerodegrees beers are all gassy.
Hopefully they are not all served at zero degrees

Cheers Andy. Sounds good. I'll give them a ring next brew. I'll certainly want to try their yeast..I'm quite partial to draught T.E.A. Not bad out of a bottle, either.

The Leader of The Opposition is tabling a motion that the next brew be a Guinness type of thing.....7lb (3.2kg) pale, 2lb (900g) flaked barley, 1lb (454g) roast barley, whatever hops, appropriate yeast.

Whatever hops :- I don't think it matters too much as they all go in at the beginning of the boil. I've never seen a hopping schedule for Guinness that has late/steep/dry hops in it, although virtually every Guinness recipe I've seen differs in the hop type(s)

But then, I'll have to impress upon her the necessity of brewing a bitter as well in order to try out Hogs Back's malt, hops, and yeast :)

A cocktail stirrer can quickly knock out the gas if there is too much :D

And the breweries are making a fair mark-up too - it comes in at less than £10 per 25kg.

An interesting fact about Guinness is that they do NOT include the roast barley in the mash - a separate "stew" is prepared and the extract run directly into the copper as the main (pale) wort is run-in. They maintain that the mash pH would be too acidic if the roast were included which would impair the body of the beer.
If I remember correctly, hops included Goldings and Northern Brewer and all were added as copper hops - no late/aroma hops.

If i'm using roast barley I tend to throw it in towards the beginning of the sparge to help buffer the ph a bit.

That's interesting. I suppose you could also chuck the roast directly into the boil, and let the hops filter out the bits together with the trub at the runoff.
