Hop Rate

Post by vaudy » Wed Feb 14, 2007 11:05 pm

Tubby Shaw - with regard to the IQ Mild recipe, I have been messing around with a spread sheet that I use (Sad Lad).

Is the hop rate stated correct, or am I doing something wrong, has I got the amount of hops for 25 litres to 18 grams in order to obtain an I.B.U. of 15.

Look forward to your confirmation of the rate to be used, don't want to end up with another disaster by over hopping particularly with Target hops which are not a favourite of mine.

IBU calculation is dependant on which calculation method is used :? there are a few methods the one used to calculate this bitterness was Rager.
Your spreadsheet must use Garetz as when I use this method I get 18g also 8)
I am sticking with 12g

Brewing Mild Tomorrow

Post by vaudy » Sat Feb 17, 2007 6:12 pm

Brewing tomorrow - had a trip to Leyland Home Brew this afternoon.
Going to have a go at the Mild Tubby Shaw posted Just with a little variation-

Using Mild Ale Malt - as supplied by LHB, not able to determine the actual variety of this malt, I belive that it is just kilned more????

The other variation is the hops - I had some Goldings and Fuggles left over so I am using these instead of the Target.
I like having plenty of hops freely in the boiler to act as a good filter after immerssion cooling.
Hopping to the same IBU of 15, and am going to add a few more Fuggles at the end of the boil 'Habbit'.
Going for a 10 gallon brew - however I usually mash in two containers but due to the lower amount of grain I am going for one, hope I don't have any drama with a set mash.

Using Safale 04 two sachets - going to make a starter in the morning, which is what I always do, with one sachet which I will pitch in one fermenter, and in the other I am going to try it straight from the sachet,
to see if it is worth the extra effort with regard the ferment getting started.

Carrying out my usual water treatment latter tonight whilst the wife watches a film on telly which I don't fancy.
Will keep you informed of event - hopefully not involving the kittens.

:?

Regards

Following my pint/keyboard interaction last night, the bad luck didn't end there :(
I set a timer to heat the mash liquor so that I could get going asap today to brew the mild recipe that I posted and the timer has bust :(
Never mind these things are sent to try us :x
Mash has 20 minutes to go and sparge liquor is being heated :)
Here's hoping for no more disasters today [-o<

Tubby Shaw - sounds like you had the luck that I had last week with the keyboard drama.
Hope the brew went well, I was an early riser starting at 6.30, just cleaned and put away my boiler, due to other commitments during the day.
Brewing was event free, and I managed an effieciency of 89%, my best yet. :D I suspect that this is due to the mild ale malt giving a better yield than the pale malt usually used, although the sparge was exceptionally good flow, and I think washing the hops at the end with boiling water helps.
Two fermenters with 25L in each @ 1040, hopefully in a cat free zone.

Looking forward to tasting, should be a quick turn round.
Presently I have no home brew ready - I am going to try my best for the sad state not to be repeated.

Look forward to hearing how you got on with the brew and the bread last night.

Cheers

You definately got better results than me Vaudy :D
I managed 25 litres at sg 1.036 giving me 80 % efficiency which is pretty good for me :D
The bread turned out great check out the cheesey beer bread post in the cooking with alcohol forum

t s - have you sampled the mild that you brewed the other week.

I am just having a pint of the recipe you gave with the variation-
Mild Ale Malt and the hops used a mixture of goldings and fuggles - left overs at a rate of 18 ibu for 25 litres (brewed 30 litres).

I will certainly be doing this brew again it is very drinkable and the hop rate is correct for my taste and expectations of a mild.
It had a quick turn round 2 weeks in the barrel, good head and froth right to the end of the pint, which has just happened- will top up in a min, nice ruby red colour (crystal clear) when held up to the light.

The wife is impressed also, always a good sign with regard to future brewing.

Cheers
