I'm not sure if the Mash got stuck but the run off it did seem to slow down a bit, i imagine this is normal though(?) The first run from 10.7 L gave a bout 7 L then after adding 8 L I got another 7 L of wort. From the 2nd sparge of 14L I think I got about 14 back. So a total of 28L which adds up pretty well :D. The temperature after 90 mins mashing was about 64C so I think it worked ok pretty good, it certainly tasted good anyway. Just waiting while the boil is on now, while enjoying a few beers of course :)

Me again,

Filtering the cooled wort now and it is taking ages!!! I definately need to put some more slots in the hop strainer! On the bright side it's coming through nice and clear, leaves pleny of time for another beer :D

Note to self: next time start the brewday before 3pm. #-o

I got about 18L back from the boiler so well short of the target (23L). I didn't top up during the boil so I guess my estimates for boiler loss(15%), loss to hops (1L) and dead vol (0.3L) are a bit low.

After diluting to 23L the SG was 1052, so something went wrong somewhere (target 1042). Oh well, fingers crossed that it will still taste good. [-o<

Sounds like a fairly successful first brewday, Tattie! Most people find they have to cut more slots, holes etc after AG no1.

Are you sure about the original gravity figure? If you really got 23 litres of wort at 1052 from 4.25kg of grain then that's very good, but it seems suspiciously high for batch-sparging. Your target of 1042 sounds more likely.

Well it was getting late and I'd had a few beers

I'll check it again this morning to see.

ok, I check the gravity this morning and I read 1052 (18-19C)

The "good" news is I think my hydrometer is rubbish. I checked water from the tap at 20C and read about 1006!

so is my original gravity more like 1046?

That sounds more likely. Efficiency-wise it's still pretty good.

Just checked the gravity with a different hydrometer, now at 1014. For comparison the original hydrometer reads 1020 so it's keeping the difference of 6, I've now realised this is a wine hydrometer but shouldn't it still read 1.000 for water at 20C?

Anyway the main thing is the beer is tasting pretty good already. It is definately tasting very much like the real Taylors Landord served in my local, so as you can image I'm rather chuffed!

:D :D :D

it all sounds good, you're obviously a lot more organised and methodical than me, I thought 40 l vol of water to get 23l seems a lttle high to me, but if you follow hogarths advice you'll be fine.

cheers

Drinking - of course

I have to admit I have been planning this for a while now, so tried to get as much right as possible. Yes, loads of great advice here, cheers everyone! I picked 40L so I had plenty extra (better than being short), it was also easy to measure out into 2x20L fermenting bins, then I treated each with the CRS (50mL, from 38mL CRS diluted to 100mL).

Hi TB,
glad to see AG#1 is going well !
How much froth is there on top now that the gravity is falling?
Time for another pic ??

Texy
Drinking : AG#1 Ridley's IPA - only 1 bottle left.
Drinking : AG#2 Grahame Wheelers Fullers ESB - plenty left.
Drinking : AG#3 Grahame Wheelers Marstons Pedigree - improving with age
Drinking : AG#4 TT Landlord - my best brew yet, only a few bottles left
In the FV : Ringwood XXXX Porter
Planning - another go at Ridley's probably

Hi Texy,

The foam has all gone now, thankfully it didn't come out of the FV. Still bubbling away gently now...

If it's an old hydrometer (like 1960s) it could be calibrated to 60 F, which will give you a reading a couple of points higher. Does it say anything on it?

It does say on it "specific gravity 60F 15.6C". I did try it in cooler water (14C) but it's still reading >1006.
