My first three beers were ruined due to the use of bleach as a sanitizer, I used to much and though I rinsed 3 times with hot water it still wasn't enough.
Indeed you can use it as a no rinse if you mix it in low enough concentrations, for me it just seems a waste of time using it if you turn around and rinse it with tap water. We do have access to some very good cheap no rinse sanitizer here in the the States so I take advantage of them. If I lived in an area where good sanitizer were hard to find I'd certainly use bleach, although I'd be much more careful of the concentration.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I didn't mean to knock bleach as a sanitizer I just meant that if you have better options why not take advantage of them.

I personally don't trust ANY no rinse sanitisers and always rinse with boiling, boiled water :!:

It's simply the fact that any sanitiser left behind is too much sanitiser IMO, and if I can reduce the amount I will :wink:

I use Star San, its main ingredient is phosphoric acid, which is also in CocaCola I see no problem with a little bit of residue left behind it has no flavor and doesn't affect the beer in any way. We are all entitled to our opinions, just as my sweeping statement about the perils of using bleach was found to be to much by some, I find the statement "I personally don't trust ANY no rinse sanitisers" to be a bit over the top. In the States we would call this a Ford vs Chevy argument which means its all personal opion :D

Sorry Wilbur I have to disagree :wink:

Your statement about using bleach was not 'sweeping' or found to be 'too much'. Bleach is a perfectly safe sanitiser as long as it's rinsed off properly :wink:

Sanitisation is all about minimising risk, something which I understand very well, having worked in aseptic manufacturing of medicaments for the last 12 years :wink:

If you can reduce 'risk' wherever possible you should. Peracetic acid is a good example as it breaks down to natural bi products, something which Iodine and chlorine can never claim to do :wink:

So rinsing, albeit with boiling, pre boiled water, is always a good way of reducing risk of contamination

Yes that's personal opinion, but not 'over the top'

I trust anything that breaks down into natural products, so to speak, providing it does so before my ale comes into contact with it :wink:

Phosphoric acid being one of those 'safe' ingredients.
