My sympathies, Is this one reason NOT to have a Tap on the fermenter?

Wish I could find a supplier of the ones we use, as you have to push them down to operate ie they lock open or closed. . . . .Of course thats no help if you forget to close it before filling :( Which is another reason why we fill via the tap.

Only one of mine does (and I wish it didn't 'cos it leaks a bit).

I have developed a fear of the insides of taps etc that I cannot see nor clean properly

steve_flack I like using http://shortify.com/4874 these fermenters.

As they come with a tap or a bung so can be used either way.
Have three of 30l ones for wine making and they are ideal for beer.

That's a Styrian Bummer! Sorry to hear it. But....it's not the fault of the tap...it's not the gun that is dangerous, but the person holding it. Can't blame the gear for pilot error.

I had to dump a full cornie owing to infection. First time ever. Strangely I didn't feel a thing which was quite liberating. Beer goes wrong, throw it away. No problem. Although in your case, where it may have turned out great - I'd be as sick as a parrot, I'm sure.
