I think it is unlikely that SWMBO's insistence on keeping the living room at the temperature of the surface of Mercury is entirely to blame. It seems more likely that you are counting shrinkage (ie measuring 'after' volume cold) as well as some other leakage.

Two points:- The volume is measured hot, so shrinkage doth not apply, and the second point is that I'm boiling outside. On reflection after a bit of research (my brewing records) - my boiler has a loss of about 12L over 90 mins, so 8L per hour for 5.4kw, so about 4.4L per 3KW - that's more in the ball park, is it not, considering that for a 25L post boil I'm starting at about 37-38L. It probably would be 5L/hour/3kw were it not for the boiler filling up when it rains
