It's lid on and cracked a bit for me. Keeping low flying aircraft out and all that. I don't have FV's in the shed though, I have them in my study and control the temp by having the rad turned off and opening or shutting the window, aquarium strips on the FV below the wort level seem a good indicator. Study is next to the airing cupboard so absorbs latent heat. It sometimes means I need a jumper on, but hey, beer's the boss. After FG is reached though it's into another vessel under an airlock whilst yeast drops out. After FG is reached the next 'air' I want my beer to mingle with is in my pint glass! :beer:

screw blowoff tubes just undo the lid, doesnt need to be taken off all the way either.

Or alternatively use antifoam and foam isn't a problem....and yes you still get a head on your beer in the glass afterwards.
